Why OKC Homeowners Are Choosing Dry Ice for Pool Scale Cleaning

If you own a pool in the Oklahoma City metro area, you’re probably intimately familiar with the frustrating white line that appears around the water’s surface in your pool. Because of our local water chemistry, calcium and scale buildup on pool tile is an inevitability. Over time, these hard water deposits can actually bond to your ceramic tile and grout, leading to permanent staining and even structural cracking if left untreated.

In the past, homeowners have had limited choices: spend hours scrubbing with a pumice stone (which can scratch the tile!) or hire a crew for professional sandblasting. There is, however, a third and superior option that is quickly becoming the new standard for eco-friendly cleaning in the pool industry: dry ice blasting.

How it Works: The Physics of a Perfect Clean

Dry ice blasting might sound like science fiction, but the process is pretty simple. We use reclaimed CO2 pellets cooled to -109.3ºF. When these pellets are accelerated at supersonic speeds and hit the calcium scale on your pool tile, three things happen simultaneously.

  1. Thermal shock: The extreme cold causes the brittle calcium scale to shrink and lose its bond with the tile. Because the scale shrinks at a different rate than the ceramic tile beneath it, the bond between the two is instantly broken.

  2. Kinetic impact: The impact of the pellet knocks the scale loose.

  3. Expansion and sublimation: As the dry ice hits the surface, it turns from a solid into a gas. During this transition, it expands, and the force of this expansion lifts the scale away from the tile.

This process is powerful enough to completely eliminate the scale buildup while being gentle enough to leave ceramic glaze completely untouched.

Why it Beats the Competition

Some customers are curious why they shouldn’t just stick with traditional cleaning methods like sandblasting or bead blasting. The answer lies in what happens afterward.

When you sandblast, or bead blast, you’re left with extra debris to clean up. These processes get the job done, but they leave behind secondary waste. With dry ice blasting, the cleaning agent simply disappears into the air. The actual calcium scale itself is the only thing that’s left to be cleaned up.

Because we aren’t using glass beads or sand, you don’t have to worry about abrasive materials and grit getting into your filtration system. Dry ice is a non-conductive and moisture-free process, which means that your pool’s water chemistry and pH balance remain unchanged.

Plus, the process of dry ice blasting does more than remove scale. It also effectively kills algae and bacteria that may have been hiding in porous grout lines.
